Looking down an alley. Each dwelling consisted of a central alley with several small rooms attached. There were anywhere from 6-10 rooms in an alley. Each room was inhabited by an entire family, which usually contained 4-6 people. Each alley usually had about 6-8 rooms. Each alley only had one bathroom, which was shared by all the people that resided there.

The young girls were very persistent, and very skilled in guilting tourists into buying what they had. Since we were a big group, the girl hung around us for a while, trying to get us to buy gum and flowers. Miniature salesmen. But once we started talking to them, they turned back into the 6 and 7 year old children that they really were. They were fascinated with our American names, and we ended up staying there for about an hour with these girls, playing memory games and singing and dancing.

Alcatraz is a type of flirtatious and erotic dance from Peru. It is a couple's dance where, traditionally, the woman has a piece of tissue between her legs while the man dances with a lit candle trying to light the tissue. If the man can light the woman's fire, that means that she is his. In order to avoid catching fire, the person with the tissue moves his or her hips really fast.

El Parque del Amor is located in the nicest part of Lima, Miraflores. Miraflores is the upscale part of Lima, where the Peruvian elite live and all the tourists visit and vacation. If you take a five minute car ride out of Miraflores into the surrounding barrios, the wealth disparity is absolutely unbelievable.

The story of how the school Fe y Alegria was built is absolutely amazing and one of the most inspiring stories I have ever heard. Their purpose and mission statement is "Fe y Alegria is a 'Movement for Integral Popular Education and Social Development' whose activities are directed to the most impoverished and excluded sectors of the population, in order to empower them in their personal development and their participation in society." When Sister Theresa went to Peru from the United States more than 40 years ago, the land where the school stands now was completely unsettled. The barrios that are seen in the background of some of the pictures were not there. There was no running water, no electricity, no transportation of any kind. Sister Theresa along with a group of squatters hiked up this small mountain and squatted on the land. The school's first buildings were tents that the people staked into the dry, infertile ground. The had to carry up all the materials they needed up the mountain by foot. They petitioned the transportation companies, the water companies, and electric companies (all privately owned) to extend their services into the foothills of Lima. At first there was no success at all, so in order for the children in the surrounding villages to get an education, the parents were required to put in a certain number of hours of physical labor per week. This mural shows the transformation the school went through from the flimsy tents pictured on the left, to the sturdy building on the right. The creation and upholding of the school was and still is a community effort.

This was the room where children learned how to be an electrician. Besides educating children in the standard academic subjects, such as reading, writing, and math, Fe y Allegria also allows their students to choose a specialty. They can chose from sewing and textiles, electrical studies, or contruction. This ensured that once their students graduated, if they did not continue on to higher education, they would be able to make a living and support themselves.
