The Plains of Abraham. The Battle of the Plains of Abraham, 13 September 1759, during the SEVEN YEARS' WAR, fought upstream from Québec on a tract of land that is thought to have been named after Abraham Martin, to whom it was granted 1635-45. A powerful British force under Major-General James WOLFE and Vice-Admiral Charles Saunders was sent up the St Lawrence to capture Québec. The French, commanded by Lieutenant-General the Marquis de MONTCALM, at first held the British at bay.

During a four-day period in November, 1838 British troops and local militia defeated an invasion force of 300 American " Hunters " and Canadian rebels. The Battle of the Windmill victory prevented the invasion force from capturing Fort Wellington, Ontario, and cutting the St. Lawrence communications link, which would have left Upper Canada open to invasion.

This building is the main building at the Fort site, it was used to house 24 families on the upper floor, along with all supplies and materials necessary for life in the fort. Officers were housed in a separate building, living a much higher standard of living.

On September 15, 1773, approximately 200 Highland Scots arrived aboard the Ship Hector. This began a wave of Scotish immigration to Nova Scotia that would last for decades. The settlers' perseverance as they sought the freedom of possessing and thriving on their own piece of land made them a fundamental part of Canada's history. Against great odds they built communities and raised families. On hearing tales from the first settlers, thousands of Scottish immigrants soon followed to this land of New Scotland. The Hector Heritage Quay and Ship Hector Replica are a testament to their courage and Nova Scotia's ties to the culture of Scotland. It is fitting that this heritage be celebrated in Pictou, "The Birthplace of New Scotland".

The Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Park is the crown jewel of the Canadian Park Service and the largest historical reconstruction in Canada. Fortress Louisbourg was built to protect France's interests in the new world and to serve as the centre of its massive seasonal fishing industry.Its location near the eastern tip of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia enabled it to serve not only as the capital of the new colony of Ile Royale but also to act as the first line of defence for France in its 18th century struggle against Great Britain for colonial supremacy in North America.

An initiative of the government of Prime Minister John Diefenbaker in 1961, the rebuilding over the next two decades of Fortress Louisbourg transformed the ruins from heaps of grass and stones to the impressive historical and interpretive site it is today. The old capital of Isle Royale was back! The Fortress offers a unique window into our past and our 18th century colonial history. Dozens of costumed animators become the town's residents of the summer of 1744. Surrounded by ramparts, the King's Bastion is a fort within a fortress. The King's Bastion Barracks is the largest building on site and in its day was one of the largest buildings in North America. Visit Chapelle St. Louis, Louisbourg's garrison chapel. See artifacts found during 20 years of archaeological excavation. Talk to a soldier. You'll find them happy to tell you about guard duty, living conditions, armaments, security, food and a soldier's life in general.

Fort Beauséjour, on the west bank of the Missaguash River near present-day Sackville, New Brunswick was built 1751-55 by the French as a counter to nearby British Fort Lawrence (near Amherst, NS). Fort Beauséjour was in poor condition in June 1755 when an attacking force of Massachusetts volunteers and British regulars laid siege. Within 2 weeks, and after suffering a direct hit on a "bombproof" shelter, French commander Louis Du Pont Duchambon de Vergor capitulated. The British renamed the site Fort Cumberland and strengthened the works. In November 1776, during the AMERICAN REVOLUTION, Fort Cumberland, under Lieutenant-Colonel Joseph Goreham of the Royal Fencible Americans, thwarted an attack by New England colonial rebels. Some repairs were made to the fort at the beginning of the WAR OF 1812, and a military presence remained there until 1833. In 1926 Fort Beauséjour National Historic Park was established.

Muskets, from top to bottom: TOP: Long Land Musket .75 Calibre first introduced about 1730. The barrel was 46 inches long and with bayonet weighed 15 pounds, and was used more than 30 years. MIDDLE: Short Land Musket .75 Calibre came into regular use in 1769, closely resembling the Long Land Musket the major change was the barrel length of 42 inches which reduced the weight and permitted easier loading and handling. BOTTOM: The India Pattern Musket .75 Calibre was officially adopted in 1797, designed after a musket which had been use in the East India Company for a number of years. This musket had a 39 inch barrel with a smooth bore. The barrel was fastened to the stock with pins. This musket was the standard issue to the Canadian Militia until 1856.

This casement was to house the numerous military and domestic stores necessary to provision an isolated fort. Imagine the container you see filled with flour, salt, meat, boots, clothing and muskets. Casements of this type were generally used for storage but in times of emergency were converted to living quarters and prisons.
